DIY Tree Planting

Step 1: Dig a hole

  • The hole should be two to three times wider than the container.
  • Don’t dig too deep. Planting depth is very important and can often lead to premature tree death if incorrect.
  • When placed in the hole, the tree’s root collar (i.e., where the roots join the main stem or trunk) should be flush with or slightly above ground level.

Step 2: Plant the tree

  • For trees in containers, gently slide the root ball out of the pot and into the hole.
  • Root balls should be loosened to discourage girdling. You can also roughen the sides and bottom of the hole to promote root penetration.
  • For burlapped trees, place the root ball in the hole and gently cut away the wire basket and burlap.
  • Plant the tree so that its root collar is flush with or slightly higher than ground level and the tree is vertical.

Step 3: Secure the tree

  • Fill the hole in and around the root ball with the soil that was removed.
  • Do not return any grass or sod to the hole.
  • Gently pack the soil around the root ball until the hole is two-thirds full to remove air pockets.
  • Fill the remaining space with water to settle the soil and allow the hole to drain.
  • Finish filling the hole with soil and apply 5 cm of soil in a circle around the root area to direct water towards the roots.

After Planting

Mulch

Mulch helps to reduce the growth of weeds and grass, retain water in the soil, minimize temperature fluctuations, and provide a slow release of nutrients. Apply 5-10 cm of mulch in a circle around the root area, ensuring it doesn’t touch or crowd the trunk.

Water

Watering helps keep the soil moist and healthy. Water trees immediately after planting and then on a weekly basis, depending on rainfall. Keep an eye on the weather and monitor for signs of drought stress on your tree.

Stake

Staking trees is not necessary unless they are exposed to high winds or if the soil is shallow. If you do choose to install stakes, be sure to remove them after one year so the trees can strengthen on their own.

Prune

Pruning improves branch spacing and promotes a strong structure for your tree. Remove dead, damaged or rubbing branches at planting, or when the tree is dormant in late fall or early spring.

Fertilize

Usually you only need fertilizer if your soil tests indicate a need for additional minerals and nutrients.

  • What kind of tree should I plant?

First, we will evaluate the conditions of the soil, sunlight, and water in your yard. Most trees need certain conditions to grow and be healthy. Once we've assessed your yard we will give you a list of the trees that will best fit your yard.

  • Where is the best place to plant a tree?

We will come look at your property to help determine the best place to plant. We recommend planting trees a minimum of 15 – 20 feet away from your foundation, to the west or east side of the building. West is always the best for energy efficiency, as the trees will shade your home in the hot afternoon sun.

  • When is the best time to plant a tree?

The best time to plant your tree will depend on the species, soil type, and growing stock of the tree in general

In Canada, there are generally two seasons for tree planting: spring (April-June) and fall (September-October).

  • What things do most trees need to grow?

Trees have specific needs - light, air, water, nutrients, and space if your trees have all this they will flourish.

  • Can trees be planted next to each other?

A rule of thumb for keeping natural growth form is to plant each tree 2/3 of the mature width of the tree apart from each other. This will allow them to eventually fill in the gap while maintaining their natural growth habit.

  • How can I make sure that my soil is good for tree-planting?

If your soil is sandy or full of clay, we can  mix in compost before planting. If you’re on a new property or near areas that have seen recent construction, we will need to dig into your topsoil, as construction in new subdivisions removes much of the topsoil, and not much of it is replaced.

  • How often should I water a newly planted tree?

During the first 2-3 years of your tree’s life, it is very important to keep it hydrated. If it isn’t raining often, water the tree with three bucketsful of water, or with a hose on a slow trickle for 15 to 20 minutes, twice a week. You can also check the soil before watering — it should always be slightly damp. If water is pooling around the tree or the soil is extremely wet after watering, you are likely overwatering and should water less frequently.

  • My tree was cabled, so why don’t I see any wires?

In most cases, you won't notice the cabling at all. In fact, cabling may be very difficult to see in your trees, especially if you don't know what you are looking for.

While cabling is extremely strong and does a great job, it is meant to be inconspicuous so it doesn't take away from the natural beauty of your trees.

We purposefully install the cables to blend in with the tree’s canopy while also ensuring that they are placed in the best spot to support the structure of the tree.

Whether you can spot the cables or not, rest assured that if Independent Tree installed the cabling, the strong wires are there and are doing their job!
